Unexpected Christmas
Many of us expect that our Christmas will involve neatly wrapped gifts, a beautifully trimmed tree, and a flawlessly cooked meal. But, the first Christmas was not at all like what the people had hoped for. In his gospel, Matthew puts little effort into dressing up the unexpected, uncomfortable, and even the seemingly scandalous events surrounding Christ’s birth. In doing so, he challenges our expectations of the perfect Christmas, and instead points us to the deeper meaning behind the holiday.
